Word Search Strategies: Find Words in a Letter Grid

1. Check the rules and target list

Before scanning, read the full list and any practice prompt. Note whether words can run horizontally, vertically, diagonally or backward. Some games restrict directions, and the provider’s instructions are more reliable than assumptions based on other puzzles.

2. Scan in a repeatable pattern

Choose a starting point and move across each row, then repeat by columns if needed. A consistent pattern makes it easier to notice a word without repeatedly checking the same area. Look first for uncommon letters or distinctive letter pairs in the target list.

• Use the first or last letter to narrow down possible starting points.
• Check neighboring cells in only the directions the game allows.
• Cross a found word off the list if the game does not do so automatically.

3. Confirm the whole word before selecting

A match must contain the target letters in the correct sequence, not just the same letters nearby. Trace the complete path before dragging or tapping. On a phone, keep your finger movement deliberate and release only after reaching the last letter.

If a word is not accepted

Check for a missed letter, reversed order or an unsupported direction. Confirm whether the game expects a drag across the word or individual taps. If the puzzle uses a timer, pause to read its help rather than repeatedly trying random paths.
